MEMBERS HAVE THEIR SAY ON CLASSIFICATION
Given the chance to voice their opinion on the possiblity to change Jerey Classification Awards over 233 people chose to vote in the online poll. Over 60% of those who participated at the end of the polling period called for change. Not content with a simple vote members took the opportunity to offer suggestions.
"My biggest issue with our current award system [HC, HC+, VHC etc.] is that when we market our elite cows to the world NO ONE KNOWS WHAT VHC MEANS, its time to change"
Opinions weren't exclusively aimed at the traditional Jersey Society terminology other members felt that the final score should be one that reflects the linears that made up the rest of the classification assessment of the cow.
"It seems strange to me that bull proofs come from the linear type traits yet our classification awards that we market cows on are not a reflection of the 1's & 9's".
The Jersey Australia Board has been reviewing classification over the past 12 months with several papers presented as a means for a thorough discussion of all issues. After plenty of debate, consultation with State committees and many members across Australia the Jersey Australia Board has voted to implement the following award system as of the 1st September 2009.
0 - 74 points Fair
75 - 79 points G (Good)
80 - 84 points GP (Good Plus)
85 - 89 points VG (Very Good)
90 points and higher EX (Excellent)
The old EX award criteria becomes the new STP (Superior Type & Production) award
Those who voted for change in the online poll will be well pleased, by stating their support they may well have helped this historical change take place. Those who opposed the change still have the ability to have input on how best to manage the new way.
