Farm Summary
Situated half way between Longwarry & Drouin in West Gippsland, Almervista Jerseys operates on 340 acres of undulating terrain. The 40 year average rainfall of 32 inches is well below much of Gippsland as the farm is on the first hill off the Longwarry flat and is located in a rain shadow.

A father and son operation that has developed strongly over the past 16 years. Over the past twelve months Alan's input has decreased dramatically with contract labour now being required.
The farm has grown in size from the original 140 acre "home" block where the dairy is situated purchased in the early 60's with the addition of 100 acres in the late 70's across the road and then the 100 acres next door to it early in 1994 bringing the total farm size to 340 acres. There are a variety of soil types in different parts of the farm which challenges management but also allows for flexibility. Milking occured in an 8 unit walk-through from 1966 to 1994 when the current 16 unit swing over was built.
We milk year round reaching maximum numbers of approx. 190 at the end of September. The calving pattern is a 15% April/May : 85% July/August/September. The herd consists of 92% registerd Jerseys, 3% Holsteins and 5% crossbred with the long term goal of 100% Jersey which will be achieved by natural attrition and the exclusive use of Jersey semen.
The Almervista stud was established in early 1991 through the Genetic Recovery scheme with the Jersey breeding tradition being alive and strong for 100 years over four generations of Yorks. AI has been used for 40 years and US genetics were happily embraced in the late 80's. Purchases in the past eigteen years have failed to knock the home bred cow families out of the herd production rankings!

The closest Almervista Jerseys gets to showing is the club On-Farm Challenge which it has entered since 1996. Highlights in the years since include several 1st prizes and placings in most classes. The biggest buzz being 1st in the Best Group of 5 in 2001 and 2nd in 1999 & 2003.

Embryo work is contining on a small scale years with the proof that in the majority of cases its easier to work with the best animals you've already bred than try and bid last on someone elses. AI is the only form of mating over the milkers and the heifers all get one shot of AI before being mopped up with a bull.
